This post was supposed to go live weeks ago.
I had it planned, scheduled, and mapped out… just like so many other things in life that I’ve carefully thought through.
And yet here we are—mid-April—finally writing it.
And honestly?
That feels fitting for the message this post holds.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
Sometimes even the best plans don’t unfold the way we expect them to.
We Make Plans… and That’s Not Wrong
When it comes to our finances, we’re taught to plan wisely.
We create budgets.
We set goals.
We build timelines and try to steward what we’ve been given well.
And that’s a good thing.
There is wisdom in planning.
There is responsibility in stewardship.
But somewhere along the way, it’s easy to start believing something subtle:
If I do this right… Things should go right.
If I budget well, spend carefully, give faithfully… then things should fall into place.
But life doesn’t always work that way.
When Doing “Everything Right” Still Doesn’t Work
There are seasons where you can be doing all the “right” things financially…
…and still find yourself facing stress, setbacks, or uncertainty.
Unexpected expenses show up.
Opportunities fall through.
Doors close that you thought were part of the plan.
And in those moments, it’s easy to internalize it:
What did I do wrong?
Did I miss something?
Why isn’t this working?
But the truth is—
Good stewardship does not guarantee predictable outcomes.
You didn’t fail just because things didn’t unfold the way you expected.
Sometimes, you’re simply seeing one small piece of a much bigger picture that only God fully understands.
God Sees What We Don’t
We plan based on what we can see.
God moves based on what we can’t.
He sees the future.
He sees the closed doors before they close.
He sees the things He’s protecting us from and the things He’s preparing us for.
So when things shift—when plans fall apart or take unexpected turns—it doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.
Sometimes what feels like disruption…
is actually direction.
Sometimes what feels like delay…
is protection.
Sometimes what feels like everything going off course…
is God quietly guiding you onto a path you never would have chosen, but deeply need.
The Tension: Control vs. Surrender
This is where it gets real.
Because planning isn’t the problem.
But holding on too tightly to the plan?
That’s where the tension begins.
I’ve had to learn—slowly, and not always gracefully—that there’s a difference between being a good steward… and trying to be in control.
Because when things stop making sense, my instinct isn’t always trust.
It’s control.
Trying to fix it.
Adjust it.
Rework the numbers.
Make it make sense again.
But there comes a point where God gently reminds me:
You were never meant to carry this on your own.
And that’s where I’ve had to come back to a simple truth I’ve repeated more times than I can count—
Let go… and let God.
Not in a passive way.
Not in a “do nothing” kind of way.
But in a surrendered, open-handed way that says:
“God, I trust You more than I trust my plan.”
Trusting God When It Doesn’t Make Sense
There have been seasons in my own life where things didn’t line up the way I thought they would financially.
Where plans didn’t work.
Where doors didn’t open.
Where I found myself questioning what I missed.
But looking back, I can see something I couldn’t see in the moment:
God was working in ways I didn’t understand.
Not every season will feel clear.
Not every step will make sense.
And trusting God in those moments?
It’s not always easy.
There may still be anxiety.
There may still be questions.
There may still be days where you wish things looked different.
But trust isn’t the absence of those feelings.
It’s choosing to place your confidence in God in the middle of them.
When the Plan Changes
If you’re in a season where things don’t make sense financially…
Where you’ve planned, prayed, and tried to do things the “right” way…
…and it still feels off—
You’re not alone.
And you’re not doing it wrong.
You might just be in a place where God is asking you to trust Him more deeply than before.
Not because He’s distant…
But because He sees what you can’t.
So keep stewarding what’s in front of you.
Keep showing up faithfully.
And when the plan doesn’t look like yours anymore…
Trust that His is still good.

- Where am I holding too tightly to my financial plan instead of trusting God’s?
- Have I been equating good stewardship with guaranteed outcomes?
- What would it look like for me to surrender this season to God?
Prayer
Lord, I come to You with open hands. You see the plans I’ve made, the goals I’ve set, and the ways I’ve tried to be faithful with what You’ve given me. But if I’m honest, there are places where I’ve held on too tightly—where I’ve trusted my plan more than I’ve trusted You. When things don’t make sense, help me not to fall into fear or control. Remind me that You see what I cannot, and that Your plans are always good—even when they look different than mine. Teach me how to surrender, not in passivity, but in trust. Help me to continue stewarding what’s in front of me while releasing the outcome to You. Give me peace in the uncertainty, strength in the waiting, and faith in the unseen. I trust You, Lord—even here. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
