There’s a quiet kind of pressure that many of us carry…
The feeling that everything depends on us.
Managing the finances.
Keeping the house running.
Raising the kids well.
Making the right decisions.
Holding it all together.
And somewhere along the way, without even realizing it, we begin to carry it like it’s all ours.
Like it all depends on us.
What We Often Get Wrong About Stewardship
When we hear the word stewardship, it’s easy to think about money.
Budgets.
Spreadsheets.
Making wise financial choices.
And yes—those things matter.
But stewardship, from God’s perspective, is so much bigger than that.
It’s not just about what’s in your bank account.
It’s about everything that’s been placed in your hands.
Your time.
Your energy.
Your home.
Your children.
Your influence.
Your heart.
Everything you have—and everything you are—has been entrusted to you.
Managing Numbers… and Learning Something Deeper
I’ve spent years managing numbers.
As an accountant, I’ve seen what happens when things are handled well… and what happens when they’re not.
I’m currently walking through a situation at work where I’m cleaning up months—an entire year, plus the last half of another year—of financial mismanagement. Things are not tracked properly. Things overlooked. Things are handled out of order. And now it all has to be sorted, reconciled, and brought back into alignment.
And as I’ve been working through all of that, I’ve felt the weight of it.
The responsibility.
The pressure to get it right.
The need to fix what’s been broken.
But if I’m honest… God has been showing me something deeper in the middle of it all.
Because while I’ve been managing numbers at work, I’ve realized I’ve been trying to manage my life the same way.
Holding everything tightly.
Trying to control outcomes.
Carrying the weight like it all depends on me.
From Managing Everything to Trusting God
I’ve spent years managing numbers… but God has been teaching me how to steward my heart.
And there’s a difference.
Stewardship isn’t about control.
It’s about trust.
It’s not about holding everything together perfectly.
It’s about recognizing that nothing you have was ever truly yours to begin with.
God is the owner.
We are the stewards.
The Difference Between Ownership and Stewardship
And that changes everything.
Because ownership says:
It’s all on me.
I have to get this right.
I can’t mess this up.
But stewardship says:
This has been entrusted to me.
God is still in control.
I am called to be faithful—not perfect.
Maybe the heaviness you’ve been feeling isn’t because you’re doing it wrong…
Maybe it’s because you’ve been carrying it like it’s yours.
Living Open-Handed Instead of Overwhelmed
When we begin to see our lives through the lens of stewardship, something shifts.
We stop clenching so tightly.
We stop striving for perfection.
We stop living like everything rises and falls on our shoulders.
And instead, we begin to live open-handed.
Faithful in what’s in front of us.
Trusting God with what we can’t control.
Surrendering the outcomes back to Him.
Stewardship and the Legacy You’re Building
This is where stewardship becomes something beautiful.
Not a burden… but an invitation.
An invitation to walk closely with God in the everyday moments of life.
To care for what He’s given us—not out of fear, but out of faith.
Because legacy isn’t built by what we accumulate…
It’s built by how faithfully we steward what God has entrusted to us.
In the small moments.
In the unseen choices.
In the way we show up, day after day.
Not perfectly—but faithfully.
Reflection Questions
- What am I holding onto as if it’s mine instead of God’s?
- Where am I trying to control instead of trust?
- What has God entrusted to me in this season?
- What would faithful stewardship look like today—not perfectly, but faithfully?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for entrusting me with the life You’ve given me. Forgive me for the times I’ve carried it like it all depends on me… for the pressure I’ve placed on myself to control what was never mine to hold. Teach me what it means to be a faithful steward. Not perfect—but faithful. Help me to trust You with what I cannot control. To release what I’ve been gripping tightly. To walk in obedience with what You’ve placed in front of me today. Shape my heart to reflect Yours and remind me that You are the One who holds it all together. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
